POLITICAL PARTIES CALLED TO ACCOUNT

The Salmon Farm Protest Group today called upon Scottish political parties, in advance of the May elections, to clearly state their polices on salmon farming in the West Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Since the expansion of salmon farming in the late 1980's many distinct populations of wild salmon and sea-trout have been driven to the point of extinction by disease and pollution from fish farms.

In a letter to Jack McConnell (Labour), David McLetchie (Conservative), Jim Wallace (Liberal Democrats), Robin Harper (Greens), Tommy Sheridan (Scottish Socialist Party), and John Swinney (Scottish Nationalist Party) the Salmon Farm Protest Group asks two critical questions, should their party obtain power in May:

  • Will your administration take immediate action to remove salmon farms from the migratory routes of West Highlands and Islands wild salmon and sea-trout?
  • Will your administration mount an immediate independent public inquiry into the regulatory failure of successive governments to properly control and monitor the activities and expansion of the farm salmon industry?
SFPG Chairman Bruce Sandison has promised to publish the answers received on the Group's web site www.salmonfarmmonitor.org which is read each week by upwards of 1,000 people, and requested a response to the questions by 14th April.
